Do you know what that simple phrase represents ..the little black dress.. ladies i know you are well acquainted so let me elaborate for the other sex.. well, to put it mildly it has come to be known by us females as that dress that makes you look like sex on legs... yes no matter the occasion. whether you are meeting and greeting Obama or getting ready to get it down and dirty on that dance floor with the guy you like but just cant seem to get, a touch of sex on legs never killed anyone. So there you have it, every girl must own at least ONE.. myself.. well am a little extravagant and I don't like to be in possession of a list of guys I cant have so i have a little more than a few..hehe..
Today's idea of the LBD .....you may have something hanging in your closet in the 'special' section that may resemble any one of these..
Or if you're like me.... not so much these.. Either way no matter your sense of style or fashion there has to be at least ONE hanging somewhere in there.
Moving on from the wishlist... let me just say that we have come a long way. Lets just say that in the past when it came to black dresses, there wasn't so much leg, back and arm involved in the design... it was a bit more....ummmmm... 'conservative'. A lot less skin and a lot more likely to put a smile on your mother's face when you are walking out of the house at an ungodly hour..
yes the only savvy black number you would have been allowed to rock in the early 19 hundreds is this little number right here.. and the only place fashionable enough to take black was at a funeral....its not fun and games anymore now is it...someone had to wear that. *sigh*
'Chanel's Ford' as it was then referred to appeared in a magazine once upon a time in 1926. comfort and versatility she had in mind.. and while she was at it she threw in some leg for the fellas i guess..
This woman's bravery, vision and nonconformity got us where we are in fashion today. We could all use a note or two from her book of life. If we could all just step out of the whole idea that there is a right or wrong way to do something and we're the ones that know best, I think we would be less angry people and there would be laughs all round..
Of corse by the 1930s other designers like Christian Dior had caught on to this fashion revolution. He came up with a stunning collection and named it 'New Look' (am guessing the British amongst us have a lightbulb flashing in our little slow-processing brains). Glamorous, edgy, Parisienne all in one..I mean are we surprised? They say no one does black like Christian Dior and now I'm convinced..I think I could even still wear these today...(don't judge okay!)
Hubert de Givenchy presented his take on the LBD in his 1952 collection, only 25 years old at the time if I may add (talent doesn't know maths..age?.. irrelevant)
Then arrived Audrey Hepburn’s in the Hollywood spotlight. Hepburn wore several of Givenchy’s Little Black Dresses in Sabrina in 1954, but it wasn’t until she wore his Little Black Dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, in 1961, that it became every woman’s dress and a wardrobe must-have.
Yes the Donna Karans, Armanis and Marc Jacobs of the world caught up EVENTUALLY but it is good to acknowledge the true founding mothers of our oh-so-treasured attire....We love you Coco..
So the moral of the story???...
NOT really go and make yourself a billion dollar industry.. I'll be content if you just push some boundaries a little, get out of your comfort zone and do what you really love...its not gonna be easy or else it won't be worth it but who knows..In the end you might just be pleasantly reworded and end up becoming a multimillion dollar industry yourself and being the topic in someone else's little history lesson..
